History of the Building: Apartamentos Malaga Premium - A Historic Building on Calle Granada
Apartamentos Málaga Premium is located at 42 Calle Granada, one of the historic streets in downtown Malaga. The building housed the former headquarters of the newspaper La Opinión de Málaga, one of the media of reference in the city. In the surrounding area are Malaga’s main cultural sites, including the Museo Picasso, the Teatro Echegeray, the Plaza de la Merced, the Cathedral and the Alcazaba de Málaga.
Calle Granada is one of the many historic streets in the old town of Malaga. During the Muslim era, this was one of the main streets of the city’s medina, the place where the most important palace homes of the time were located. After the Catholic Monarchs took the city, it became known as Calle Real (English: “Royal Street”), as this was the street that they walked along. Its name was later changed to the one we know today when it became the street that had to be taken by anyone heading in the direction of Granada, hence the name.
Throughout its history, the Apartamentos Málaga Premium building has borne witness to the many transformations of this emblematic street. A relic that remains from the Muslim era is the so-called “Barreras”, narrow blind alleys that served as access to a few homes.
Nowadays Calle Granada is one of the liveliest streets in the centre of Malaga. It has many restaurants, terraces and shops, and just a short walk away are the main sites that should not be missed by anyone visiting the city.
Malaga Premium Apartments in San Telmo Street: An Enviable Environment
San Telmo Street is set in the heart of the historic centre of Malaga, where we find the second building of Apartamentos Málaga Premium and La Terraza de San Telmo. Surrounded by Carretería street, Comopañía street and Plaza de la Constitución, San Telmo street bustle with history, culture, leisure and classic buildings.
The surrounding alleys follow the labyrinthine and narrow structure, witness to their Muslim past. This area of downtown Malaga was so important that centuries ago it housed the headquarters of Malaga City Council (today in Paseo del Parque).
Today, a few steps from our tourist apartments you can find the building of the Jesuit School that today is home to the Ateneo de Malaga and the University Orpheon. Also, the Carmen Thyssen Museum includes an exhibition of the Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection. The Church of the Sacred Heart is another surprising attraction in the neighbourhood, with its neo-Gothic style and its enclave in a square surrounded by narrow alleys.
Finally, due to its importance in our city, Carretería street and the Plaza de la Constitución are usually the hotspots of all the great festivals and celebrations in the city. Do you want to experience Easter and the Semana Santa in Malaga? Are you looking for a relaxing space with spa treatments? A day of shopping? All this and much more is just a few steps from our accommodation in San Telmo Street.
